Do you want to change your behavior? Change your identity.

In a recent Self Improvement Daily episode, Brian Ford talked with Jim Fortinabout the power of identity. (A powerful podcast episode. Link in the comments)

A non smoker isn’t even tempted if someone asks them to smoke. Why? Because it’s part of their identity.

How many times have you heard “I don’t smoke.”

They don’t even have to decide because they identify as a non smoker.

🤔 What behaviors do you want to get rid of or create?

⭐️ Now decide what identity you need to adopt to become who you want to be.

An identity that has meant a lot to me is my identity as a child of God.

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” - Romans 8:16-17

Think about it. You are a literal son or daughter of the most powerful being. You are his heir. You are important. You have an infinite potential.

Don’t ever forget it.

Here’s a link to a music video that my little brother did. It has a powerful message. And my little family is in it.

Enjoy!

Use Friction as a Tool

I've been thinking a lot about friction lately. Especially as I'm working from home and have more distractions than ever before.

Friction is simply a tool in our toolbox. Are you using it to your advantage?

⏫ We should increase friction in the things we want to stop doing. (example: move distracting apps to a distant page and folder on your phone).

⏬ We should decrease friction for the things we want to do more (example: I've started putting a book next to my bed so I read more often).

These ideas are not my own :) Thanks to Nir Eyal and his book, Indistractible, for helping me think about this.

Choose to Act

You can choose to act... or be acted upon.

As a human, you have complete control and agency over your life. You can make decisions that impact the world around you. You can change the world.

or...

You can let the world around you decide what you do. You can let society, social networks, algorithms, or addictions dictate your actions and thereby your life.

It's your life. Take action. Be an agent for change.

Are you afraid to grow?

😱 Are you afraid to grow? 📈

Sometimes I am. The past month has been insane! I have about 10 web design projects that I'm working on, and it just keeps getting busier and busier.

While this is a good problem to have, it can be stressful... I'm at the point where I've decided to do 2 things:

1. I'm going to start charging more. This way I can take on less, higher-profile clients.
2. I'm going to start bringing in people to help grow and scale my business.

That's scary though!

Up to this point, my business has been all me. I'm a freelancer. If I fail, it's just me.
If I succeed, it's just me.
Bringing people in creates opportunities for growth, but also more pressure. Now, I'll be responsible for others.

Anyway, wish me luck! :)
